Are lilies toxic to cats?

Lilium longiflorum · Flowering houseplants

Seriously dangerous to cats

Cats: Severe Dogs: Not listed

True lilies cause kidney failure in cats: even pollen groomed off fur or a sip of vase water. Treat any exposure as an emergency and call your vet immediately. Dogs typically only get mild stomach upset.

If you think your pet has eaten this, call your vet or an animal poison line now. Do not wait for symptoms.

This is the one every cat owner should know, because it is the plant most likely to kill a cat and the one most likely to arrive in a bunch of flowers. True lilies, the Lilium and Hemerocallis genera, cause acute kidney failure in cats. The whole plant is dangerous: petals, leaves, stem, pollen and the water in the vase. A cat does not need to eat a leaf. Brushing past the flower and grooming the pollen off its own fur has been enough.

What to look for

  • Vomiting, drooling or refusing food in the first few hours
  • Lethargy and hiding, often after a brief apparent recovery
  • Drinking and urinating much more than usual, then much less
  • Yellow pollen on the face, paws or coat, which is itself a reason to call

If your pet has chewed it

Treat any suspected exposure as an emergency and phone your vet or an animal poison line immediately, before symptoms appear. Do not wait to see whether your cat seems unwell, because by the time the signs are obvious the kidney damage is already underway. Take a photo or the plant label with you. If pollen is on the coat, mention it, and avoid letting your cat groom it off.

Can you keep it anyway?

The honest answer for a cat household is not to have true lilies indoors at all, and to ask friends and florists not to send them. There is no safe height on a shelf, because pollen falls and cats walk through it. Kounts Care will not let a lily onto a profile quietly: adding one to a household with a cat raises a full-screen warning you have to acknowledge, and it raises the same warning retroactively the day you add a cat.

Let the app remember this for you

Kounts Care holds your plants and your pets in one household, so it checks every new plant against the cats and dogs you actually own, names them in the warning, and runs the check again over your existing plants the day a new animal arrives. Toxicity warnings are free at every tier.

Questions people actually ask

Which lilies are actually dangerous to cats?

The killers are the true lilies, Lilium species such as Easter, Stargazer, tiger, Asiatic and Oriental lilies, along with daylilies, which are Hemerocallis. Plants that carry lily in their common name but sit in other genera, like peace lilies and calla lilies, are a different and much less serious problem: they irritate the mouth but do not attack the kidneys. If you cannot tell which you have, treat it as a true lily and call your vet.

My cat drank the water from a lily vase. Is that a problem?

Yes, and it is worth a call. Vase water from true lilies is documented as a route of poisoning. Tip it out, keep your cat away from it, and phone your vet or a poison line for advice.

Are lilies dangerous to dogs too?

Much less so. In dogs, true lilies typically cause stomach upset rather than kidney failure. That is not a reason to let a dog chew one, but it is a genuinely different level of risk from the one cats face.

How does Kounts Care help with this?

It knows both halves of your household. When a plant is added it is cross-referenced against the cats and dogs on your profiles, and a severe result like a true lily gets a full-screen warning rather than a badge you might scroll past. The check is free at every tier.
