A sago palm is not really a palm, it is a cycad, and it is one of the few houseplants that regularly kills dogs. Every part of the plant contains cycasin, which attacks the liver, and the seeds concentrate it. This is not a drooling and mild vomiting plant. It is the kind where the difference between a good outcome and a bad one is measured in hours.
What to look for
- Vomiting, sometimes with blood, and diarrhoea within a few hours
- Lethargy, weakness or a wobbly walk
- Loss of appetite and a hunched, uncomfortable posture
- Yellowing of the gums or the whites of the eyes, which means liver damage
If your pet has chewed it
Go to a vet immediately if any amount was eaten, and do not wait for symptoms. Take the plant or a photo of it with you and say the words sago palm or cycad, because it changes what they do next. Signs can appear within fifteen minutes or take hours, and an apparently fine dog can still be in trouble.
Can you keep it anyway?
If you have a dog that chews, this is a plant to rehome rather than relocate. Dogs dig, pots get knocked over, and the seeds are the dangerous part. If you keep one, it needs to be somewhere the animal genuinely cannot reach, and dropped seeds need clearing the moment they fall.

How much sago palm is dangerous?
Enough that no one should be doing the arithmetic. Veterinary sources describe one or two seeds as potentially fatal to a dog. Treat any quantity as an emergency and let a vet decide, rather than trying to judge whether it was enough.
Are sago palms toxic to cats as well?
Yes. The ASPCA lists the sago palm as toxic to both cats and dogs, and the mechanism, liver damage, is the same. Cats are less likely to chew one, which is a matter of behaviour rather than a matter of safety.
Are other palms dangerous too?
Most true indoor palms are not. Parlor palms, areca palms, kentia palms, majesty palms, lady palms and ponytail palms all appear as non-toxic on the ASPCA list. The sago is the outlier, and it is the one that is not botanically a palm at all.
